On Costa Rica map, it is a Central American country with 4.5 million inhabitants. San José is the capital and largest city of the country. Almost a quarter of Costa Rica's population lives in the metropolitan area. Before the colonization of the country in Spain in the 16th century lived in Costa Rica few natives. The country declared sovereignty in 1847 and has since become one of Latin America's most important wealth-producing countries. After a bloody civil war, the army was abolished in 1949 and was one of the few countries in the world in which there was no standing army. The total area is 51,100 square kilometers. Spanish is the official language in Costa Rica. Many indigenous languages are also spoken here, such as Cabécar, Bribri and Maléku. After the Spaniards arrived, the language became popular. The Spanish ruler has defined the language as the official language of the country and has remained the same until today. Spanish is used in the country's state administration, in the country's media and in educational institutions in Costa Rica.
Costa Rica is a mountainous country between the Caribbean and the Pacific. The coast is made up of beaches and mangroves. As you move further inland, the Talamanca Mountains divide the land into mountains. The average height of these mountains is thousands of feet, although some peaks are much higher. Mountains in higher elevations often protrude into the clouds and form a cloud forest habitat. The highest peak in Costa Rica is Cerro Chirripo, 12,000 feet high. There are also many volcanoes in Costa Rica, but only five are considered active. There are many streams, rivers and waterfalls, but only a few lakes. The Arenal Lake is the largest lake in the country in front of the famous volcano.
